A philodendron selloum, or tree philodendron, is native to South America but also grows outdoors on the East and Gulf coasts of the United States. Indoors this easy-care, self-heading philodendron takes up a lot of space, often spreading 5ft.

Adding to this confusion, Schott first published the name P. bipinnatifidum in 1832, but did not fully describe the plant until 3 years after Koch described P. selloum in Appendix Specierum. If it was a simple naming issue the older name, Philodendron bipinnatifidum, would take precedence, but there are also differences listed in the descriptions of these two species that kept the argument alive.

The Monstera is often confused with P. bipinnatifidum, otherwise known as the split-leaf philodendron. Both plants bear similar split leaves and growing habits as house plants. But the Monstera is not a philodendron and in its natural habitat is fruit-bearing (hence the “deliciosa” name!).
