The photosynthetic dinoflagellates are important primary producers in coastal waters. Some photosynthetic dinoflagellates are symbiotic, living in the cells of their hosts, such as corals. 2018-04-16 Dinoflagellates are fascinating protists, mostly unicellular, distributed in environments ranging from the polar to tropical seas, hypersaline, coastal, estuarine and oceanic waters. There are about 2,377 dinoflagellate species recognized.

Dinoflagellates

Though most dinoflagellates are marine planktons, some of them are also found in freshwater ecosystems. They are known to possess the characteristics of both flora and fauna and serve as a crucial link in the food chain.

They are probably best known as a principal cause of "red tides" and paralytic shellfish poisoning.

Dinoflagellates are single-celled photosynthetic organisms. They are widespread in nature with over 2,000 different types of dinoflagellates found in marine and freshwater environments.

Dinoflagellates are a group of unicellular protists that can be identified using the light microscope, and are (usually) recognized by their golden-brown plastids, assimilative cell with indented waist, distinctive swimming pattern, and relatively large nucleus that contains visible chromosomes. Dinoflagellater som även kallas pansarflagellater är en grupp encelliga alveolater. 90 % av arterna är marina men det finns även limniska medlemmar.

Dinoflagellates are tiny, one-celled organisms that live in oceans and freshwater ponds, rivers, and streams. Some dinoflagellates are like plants, depending on sunlight and basic nutrients for growth. Others are like animals, eating bacteria and microscopic organisms. We created a dataset of dinoflagellate transcriptomes to resolve internal phylogenetic relationships of the group. We show that the dinoflagellate theca originated once, through a process that likely involved changes in the metabolism of cellulose, and suggest that a late origin of dinosterol in the group is at odds with dinoflagellates being the source of this important biomarker before the Se hela listan på academic.oup.com Not all dinoflagellates are autotrophic, however, and some do not photosynthesize at all. They can also exist by several variably heterotrophic strategies including species that are phagotrophic (ingesting whole cells), saprophytic (feeding on decaying matter), parasitic (feeding directly on other organisms), and mutualistic (living in mutually beneficial symbioses). Dinoflagellates essentially have two means of reproduction. During normal conditions, they reproduce just like any cell, by asexual division.
